Out of Hours Euthanasia/Medical Visits

Taking the decision to say goodbye is one of the hardest things any pet carer will ever do and we can all feel guilty and confused, especially whether it is the right time to do it.

Whether we worry about doing too early or leaving it too late, we look to our pets to give us a clue. Even if we recognise that ‘the light has gone from their eyes’ the decision is never easy. And after the event we can be overwhelmed with grief. All these feeling are normal but affect each individual differently. We are here to support you. If you would like further information about help available to cope with your bereavement please contact us.

You do not need to be a client of Selix Vets to benefit from this service. We offer this service to individuals and to practices.

When the pet’s condition deteriorates

When the pet’s condition deteriorates to the point where his or her comfort and well being are compromised, we are there to help carers make the decision to let them go.
While we all hope that our pets will pass away peacefully in their sleep, unfortunately this is very uncommon and it falls to us as their carers to gift them a peaceful and dignified death. Euthanasia, as the name implies, is meant to be a ‘good death’ and as such it is a gift, a thank you for all the happiness, companionship and fun they have given us. We accept our pain to relieve theirs.

If your pet requires euthanasia

We normally administer a sedative first to minimise any distress in handling or need to restrain him or her. This takes 10 to 20 minutes to take effect, though this time may vary depending on the pet’s condition. Once your pet is sleepy, we administer an overdose of anaesthetic into a vein or one of major organs such as the liver or kidney to allow a peaceful passing.

After Care

Unless you wish to bury your pet at home, we can arrange cremation (communal or individual) and will take the pet (special arrangements apply if your pet is over 30kg). Alternatively we can help you arrange collection of your pet directly from your home by Pet Rest (petrest.co.uk, 0330 332 8227). They will collect your pet, carry out an individual cremation and return the ashes to you within 3 days, for a set fee.

Visits

We also offer visits to provide basic medical treatment to enable a carer to present the pet to their own vet in normal working hours or if some treatment is needed prior to transportation to the out of hours service, e.g. emergency pain relief.
In these cases, Selix Vets will assist clients in loading the animal into their own vehicle, but cannot provide transportation as we are not insured for this purpose.

We only accept clients through personal recommendation
from other clients or referral from vets
